OMFG what a day. A disastrous day. Well, mostly. Be forewarned - this post will likely get long.
It started out with finding that the kids' school was closed again. Not only that, but Dan's work had decided to cease operations for the day, as well. How nice for him! My company won't shut down for anything. Back in the big blizzards of '03 and '06 we were still required to come to work (or take a personal day). In fact, we were told then to stay in nearby hotels so that we wouldn't be late to work and that if we showed up after 9am we could be written up for tardiness. Nice, eh? Ok, but this post isn't about years past.
Anyway, so Dan was able to stay home with the kids. We turned on the news and found that as of 6am, the official snow totals for the town we live in were up to 17.5 inches with another 3-5 expected by the end of the storm this evening. Yikies! Because I haven't been feeling all that great and I've been getting
these weird "zinger" headaches, he didn't want me to try to drive in to
work by myself so he insisted on bundling up the kiddos and driving me
in to work. The roads weren't too bad considering the amount of snow we got and how little had actually been plowed. (I took some pics and I'll post 'em once I get them off of my camera and phone - I haven't done that yet!) It normally takes about 15-20 minutes for me to drive in to work. It only took a little under 30. Not too bad at all.
So I got into work and set up for the day. I've had some little things to work on to keep me busy, so that's been good at least. At one point in the day I went down to the cafeteria to get some ice for my water bottle and looked outside to the patio area and saw how the snow had piled up on the patio furniture. It looks like a huge wedding cake or something. Check this out:

Crazy, isn't it? I took this pic around 10am if I recall correctly. It was still coming down like mad, too. Later this afternoon I found out that one of the major projects I've been working on (and that I've been really proud of because I took a concept and made it work!!) needed to be completely reworked because some of the functionality had changed. No one had kept me in the loop on these changes to the project scope so I'd had no idea that I was going to need to make these changes. That's incredibly frustrating, you know? Uggh!
So, I called Dan around 3 or so and told him I should be picked up about 5pm. He said he'd leave between 4 and 4:15. At 4:30 I got a call from him saying he was going to be very late. I asked him why he was going to be very late - fearing the worst, of course, like accidents and such. It turned out that Dan had thought he'd left the keys in the ignition in the van and he and the kids went out into the garage to get into the van. When he realized the keys were actually inside hanging on the key rack, he tried to go back into the house, only to find that one of the kids had been playing with the lock to the garage door and locked the door. Dan and the kids were completely locked out of the house and unable to go anywhere because the keys to both vehicles were locked in the house. He was ready to try to use his shoulder to break in the door. I told him to call a locksmith. I looked one up on the web and found one that guaranteed $29 and lowest price of all locksmiths in our town. They also said they could be here in 15 minutes. Dan called 'em up and they said because of the weather it would be more like 30 minutes and it would also be $80, not $29. Apparently $51 of it is for labor. *rolling eyes* Thirty minutes later he got a call saying it was going to be another 35-40 minutes. Another 30 minutes went by and he got another call saying that it would be another 30 minutes before anyone could make it out. Yeah, Dan was pretty ticked off.
Dan's a pretty smart guy and by this point he was ready to say screw it and try to bust in the door but he pulled out his iPhone and looked up other locksmiths in the area instead. Another one said $30 with a 30-minute arrival time so he called them. They said with the weather it would be more like 45 but they'd get someone out there. They did, eventually, and the guy charged us $180. So much for the $30. Ridiculous! Dan said it took the guy about 3 minutes to pop the lock and let him in. Is that really worth $180 when the website said $30? Well, technically, I guess not, but given that he and the kids had been out in the garage in the van (bundled with blankets that I keep in the car and van for emergencies - yay me!) in the freezing cold for a few hours, I think it was worth it in the long run.
I finally got picked up at 8:15. Long freaking day. But, looking on the bright side, I got all of the necessary changes made to the previously mentioned project and when we left after he picked me up, there were hardly any cars on the road. That's a bright side, right?
Tomorrow is the Halloween Festivities where I work. I'm the event lead for my department so I'm in charge of getting everything and getting my team to help with set-up and working it. This year we're doing Worms in the Dirt cups for our station. It ought to be fun. We've got 4 big packs of Oreo cookies, a couple boxes of baggies, and 9 bags of Gummi worms. Tomorrow at lunch I need to go to Sam's Club to buy the cups and cans of pudding. Fun times. Hopefully the roads won't be too bad. Uggh, it's almost 10:30 and it's STILL snowing! Supposedly this storm was supposed to end by 5. It's only 6 hours late. *rollseyes* Ah well. Until tomorrow, then.
